DISCRIPTION: Cauliflower is a cool weather
crop in the cabbage family these includes broccoli, brussels sprouts,
kale. Cauliflower is a more difficult crop than cabbage. There are many
varieties and colors, purple, orange and white
PLANTING: Start seeds indoors before the last
frost. Seeds germinate in 3-10 days. The seedlings can be transplanted
while the weather is still cool. Water the seedlings after planting,
wilting could damage the plant. Cauliflower needs at least 6 hours of
sun, more if possible. The soil should be firtile, well drained, moist
soil rich in humas. Place seedling 18 to 24 inches apart in a row. plants
need regular watering for even moisture, organic mulch will keep the
soil cool and moist and help to keep weeds down.Cauliflower heads
need to be blanched. This involves tying the outer leaves together to
cover and protect the curd when the head is about 2 to 3 inches in size.
Blanching protects the heads from sun damage. There are self- blanching
varieties of cauliflower, the leaves naturallly curl to protect the
head.
HARVESTING: Cauliflower should be ready to
harvest in 60 to 100 days for transplants. Cauliflower head should be
firm and white and about 6 to 8" in diameter at time or harvesting.
