Banana plants live in warm frost-free countries suitable for outdoor cultivation. In the United State only parts of South Florida would the climate be suitable. Bananas need a rich moist soil during its period of active growth. The soil should contain generous amounts of humus, rich compost or manure are best. After bearing fruit the main stem dies and suckers will grow and replace the dead plant. Propagation of this plant is easy using suckers from the base of the main plants. Spring is the best time to plant the suckers as the temperatures are warming. Keep well watered, when planting mix compost and munure in the soil. VARIETIES: M. paradisiaca sapientum (the common Banana); M. nana or M. Cavendishii (the dwarf Banana); M. paradisiaca (Plantain); M. textilis; M. Basjoo; M Ensete; M. rosacea; M. sumatrana; M. zebrina; M. malaccensis; M. coccinea. |
